Beholding the Young Heart of Silicon Valley

Akasha Zhu · 2026

Around 1971, Palo Alto. The telephone rang in Bill Hewlett's home.1971

On the other end was a twelve-year-old boy who said he was building a frequency counter and lacked parts. No introduction, no credentials, not even the social skill of a greeting — only a question as concrete as a question can be. Hewlett talked with him for twenty minutes, gave him the parts, and gave him a summer job on an HP assembly line besides.

The boy's name was Steve Jobs. The story has been told ten thousand times, but all ten thousand tellings are about the one who made the call. This essay is about the one who answered it: by what power did Hewlett, in twenty minutes, across a telephone line, recognize a heart?

Silicon Valley's deepest craft is not making things; it is recognizing people. The top incubators, the top VCs, the top founders all stake everything on the same wager — recognizing, while a person has nothing, that he will have everything. This craft has a precise verb. It is not "sizing people up." Sizing up is matching experience against templates.

It is beholding — 照见: to shine a light and see.

I. Beholding the Obsessed Heart: It Cannot Be Faked, Nor Hidden

A Y Combinator interview lasts only ten minutes.Y Combinator

What information can ten minutes gather? A résumé cannot be finished, a business plan cannot be explained through, due diligence is out of the question. Yet with those ten minutes YC sieved out Airbnb, Stripe, Dropbox. The fact itself is the proof: what they do in those ten minutes is not collecting information at all — it is beholding. And the first thing they behold is obsession.

Paul Graham later wrote the methodology down, under an odd name: the bus ticket theory. He observed that people who do great work share one trait — a "disproportionate interest" in something, an obsession far exceeding the thing's worldly value, like someone obsessed with collecting old bus tickets: no one pays him, no one applauds him, he collects purely because the thing burns, in his eyes, with a light no one else can see. Paul said the most mysterious term in the formula of genius is this one. So YC's interview hides a demon-revealing question: What have you built that nobody asked you to? Code written for love, machines dismantled for curiosity, a summer burned away for one idea. A résumé records what you were required to do; only the part no one required records who you are.

Jobs, recognizing people himself, used a more direct mirror. In the final round of hiring he stopped asking questions — he wheeled the still-secret Macintosh prototype in front of the candidate, lifted the cover, and did only one thing: watched their eyes. Some began to comment politely; some began to inquire cautiously; and some — the eyes lit at once, the hand reached out on its own, and once it touched the mouse it would not let go, questions pouring out one after another. That last kind was what Jobs wanted. That moment, he said, told him more than all the interview questions combined.

Here is the principle: obsession is the consequence of an abundant heart. A person of sufficient inner force can hold attention on one thing long enough — long enough for the surface to turn transparent and the simple structure underneath to surface. And essence is always beautiful; whoever has truly seen essence once becomes addicted. So the obsessed carry a particular gaze, a certainty of "I have seen what you have not." That gaze cannot be faked — feigned passion does not survive questioning; three layers down it bottoms out. Nor can it be hidden — a truly obsessed person, brushing that topic, changes frequency through the whole body.

So beholding the obsessed heart takes no more than ten minutes. Peter Thiel simply institutionalized the craft: the Thiel Fellowship, a hundred thousand dollars each to people around twenty, on condition that they drop out of college to do the thing that keeps them awake at night. Everyone cursed it as ruining futures — until out of the list walked the boy who built Ethereum. What Thiel bet on was never the project; it was obsession itself: a person willing to drop out for an obsession has already completed the proof by action.

Refrain: obsession cannot be faked, nor hidden.

II. Beholding the Emptied Heart: If the Story Isn't Simple, the Heart Isn't Clean

The second heart is far harder to behold. Obsession has light; it comes at your face. The original heart is quiet — you must lean very close to hear it.

YC's true beholder in the early years was not, in fact, Paul Graham; it was his cofounder and wife, Jessica Livingston. Paul later wrote an essay specifically to say so: the world assumed YC's core was his technical judgment — wrong. YC's least replicable asset was Jessica's "social radar." At the interview table, Paul judged whether the idea would work; Jessica judged only one thing: is this person real, or performing. Who came to build, and who came to be a founder; whose desire grows from their own body, and whose desire was copied off TechCrunch. Paul said she was almost never wrong, and that he himself could be fooled by smart people — she could not, because intelligence can fool an argument, but not a radar.YC早年真正的照心人,其实不是Paul Graham,是他的联合创始人、也是他的妻子Jessica Livingston。

What does that radar scan for? John Doerr supplied the classic coordinate system: missionary, or mercenary. The mercenary comes for the valuation, the missionary for the mission; the mercenary talks exits, the missionary talks users; the mercenary's desires run to a long list, the missionary's desire is a single sentence.

Mark that last line — the length of desire is the original heart's most honest lab report. Don Valentine, founder of Sequoia, prized one thing in founder interviews that outsiders found insubstantial: whether they could tell a story. He said he never in his life understood why some people cannot explain their own company. But this was not a test of eloquence — there is only one reason a story cannot be told simply: more than one desire in the heart. A person whose original heart is true has a desire simple to the point of naivety, so the story stands up in one sentence. A person whose original heart is bent has vanity, fear, greed, and performance mixed into the desire, each demanding a place in the story, and the story bloats.

Confusion of narrative is confusion of heart, leaking out.

And downstream of the true original heart is restraint. For a person with a single-sentence desire, saying no to the other thousand things costs no effort — he is not resisting them; he genuinely does not want them. So beholding the emptied heart has an inverse indicator too: license, more often than not, means bent. A founder unrestrained in all directions — wanting everything, touching everything, placing himself larger than the work — that is not youthful spirit; it is the symptom of an untrue heart. Son Masayoshi and WeWork are this section's most expensive counterexample: a twelve-minute tour, a check of billions, and what Son said to Neumann was not "restrain yourself" but "you're not crazy enough." He beheld license as boldness, bentness as wildness. When the forty-seven-billion-dollar valuation came down, what collapsed was not the business model — it was that in those twelve minutes, no one had beheld the heart.

Refrain: if the story isn't simple, the heart isn't clean.

III. Beholding the Avenging Heart: Résumés Record Achievements, Wounds Record Ambition

The third heart, the top beholders never look for in a résumé — they look for it in wounds.

Paul Graham wrote in "Cities and Ambition" that great cities each whisper to their residents: Cambridge says "you should be smarter," New York says "you should be richer," and what Silicon Valley says is "you should be more powerful" — you should go change the world. A city is an enormous beholding apparatus; its function is to let the large-appetited stop apologizing for their appetite. But a city can only encourage ambition; it cannot manufacture it. Uncommon ambition almost always comes from uncommon trauma.

Sequoia internalized this into muscle memory. Doug Leone, later Sequoia's global steward, immigrated from Italy at eleven without a word of English and was mocked for his accent on the school bus. That "outsider feeling," he says, burned in him all his life. So when he reads founders, his eyes pass over funding rounds and famous schools, hunting one thing — the chip on the shoulder, that never-extinguished low fever left in a person by "they said I couldn't." His partner Michael Moritz put it more bluntly: what we most love to back are outsiders, immigrants, the rejected — because complete people have nothing to prove. In a person the world has treated gently, ambition is an ornament; in a person the world has refused, ambition is breathing.

The list runs long. Jobs — given up by his birth parents at birth, exiled before forty from the company he founded. Musk — beaten into the hospital as a boy, deposed by his board mid-honeymoon. Ellison — told again and again by his adoptive father, "you'll never amount to anything." Palmer Luckey — swept out the door by Facebook, who turned around, built Anduril, and forced the old employer to come back and sign contracts. Trauma chisels a hole in a person, and for the rest of that life the energy jets out of that hole. It is not elegant, but it is the real fuel this machine burns — a hundred times more honest than the word passion.

But in beholding the avenging heart, the real skill is not finding the wound — it is discerning the wound's direction. Revenge aimed at people curdles into venom: a life trapped in the shape of one's tormentor, where even winning is losing — that is what filled the syringes of Theranos. Revenge aimed at fate is what achieves great things: what he means to overthrow is not any person but the verdict itself — "you can't." Musk spent not one minute avenging himself on his childhood abusers; he turned the whole revenge toward physical limits — since this planet wronged him, he would build the option of another planet. So what the top VCs are really listening for in an interview is this: when this person speaks of past injustice, is it hate in the eyes, or fire.

Hate contracts; fire expands. Hate wants the other to lose; fire wants the self to become.

Refrain: résumés record achievements, wounds record ambition.

IV. Beholding the Shepherd's Heart: Listen to How He Speaks of What He Gave Up四、照牧羊心:听他怎么谈他放弃的东西

The first three hearts are hot. But a person who is only hot, the top beholders dare not back — heat makes one fall in love with one's own product, one's own team, one's own story, and the market loves no one. So the fourth beholding beholds the cold: a shepherd's heart.

The shepherd keeps his flock day and night and knows every sheep better than anyone — yet in shearing season he shears, and on the appointed day the sheep go to market. He looks extremely ruthless, but his ruthlessness is not aimed at the sheep; it is aimed at the seasons: he is merely acting, strictly, by objective law. The shepherd is not the sheep's master; he is heaven's law, executing among the flock.

How is this heart beheld? Ben Horowitz drew a division: the peacetime CEO and the wartime CEO — the former expands advantages, the latter faces survival; the former can cultivate consensus, the latter must arrogate heaven's mandate alone. And what the beholder truly wants to know is: this person, so fluent in vision — when winter comes, can he bring the hand down.

There is a way, in an interview. The sharpest question is to have the founder talk about what he has given up — the product line cut, the cofounder counseled out, the team laid off. The answers sort people into three kinds. The first kind speaks all grievance and deflection: those are people who show mercy to the law, who violate the season to spare feelings, until the whole flock freezes dead. The second speaks lightly, even with relish: those have aimed the ruthlessness at the wrong object — cruelty is toward persons, and a cruel founder keeps no one. Only the third kind speaks with calm and specificity: why the decision was unavoidable, told coldly; how the people were settled, told warmly. Ruthlessness is for the law, mercy is for people, and the two do not fight — that is the complete shepherd's heart. In May 2020, Chesky cut a quarter of Airbnb: the decision cold to the bone, no waiting, no illusions; the execution became the most-quoted layoff letter in Silicon Valley history — full severance, extended health coverage, the recruiting team turned around to find jobs for the departing. Cold was the decision; warm was the hand.

And the grand master of this craft once demonstrated a perfect answer himself. In 1990, half a year after Cisco's IPO, it was under Valentine's Sequoia that the founding couple who had invented the multiprotocol router with their own hands were shown out of their own company. Call it cruel — but Cisco later became, for a time, the most valuable company in the world. Valentine's famous line, "bet on the market, not the people," is often misread as cold-blooded; in truth it is the shepherd's creed: people can be changed, the season cannot be defied. YC compressed the same heavenly law into four words — make something people want. It sounds gentle; it is the most merciless sentence in Silicon Valley: your ideals, your toil, your story — heaven's law recognizes none of it; heaven's law recognizes only whether anyone wants it.

The shepherd's heart is total surrender to that sentence.

Refrain: the shepherd shears the sheep; he does not hate them.

V. The Beholding of Excess Return: Alpha Hides in the Hidden Young Heart五、超额之照:alpha,藏在被隐藏的少年心里

Now gather the four beholdings into one place and ask the last question.

All four lie in plain sight — the bus ticket theory is a public essay, missionary-versus-mercenary a framework worn smooth with use, chip on the shoulder hangs on every VC's lips. The method can be learned by anyone. Why does the excess return still fall to so few?

Because this trade has one cruel law of pricing: the visible young heart carries no alpha. A founder with shining eyes, a clean story, a wound aimed the right way, who speaks of giving things up with the right cold and the right warmth, sitting under the demo-day spotlight — everyone can behold him, so everyone is bidding, and the price fills instantly. A heart everyone can see is beta. The only truly excess investment is of one kind: beholding the hidden young heart — in the place where consensus has ruled "no heart here," lighting one up.

What hides a young heart? Nearly every legendary return in Silicon Valley history corresponds to one of the ways.

Hidden by appearance. In 1976, Valentine walked into Jobs's garage and saw a long-haired, barefoot, long-unwashed hippie. Afterward he telephoned the man who had made the introduction to demand: why did you send me a "renegade from the human race"? — but watch what he did next: he did not walk away; he sent Markkula over. Every signal of appearance was negative, yet beneath the smell and the hair Valentine beheld the obsessed heart still burning. Apple's first table was set that way.

Hidden by unseriousness. In 2008, two young designers went fundraising with the idea of "letting strangers sleep in your home"; seven prominent investors declined $150,000 for ten percent — Chesky later framed the rejection letters. At the end of their rope, they packed cereal into presidential-campaign commemorative boxes of their own design, forty dollars a box, and sold thirty thousand dollars' worth to pay rent. Everyone saw the absurdity; only Paul Graham beheld something else. If you can sell four-dollar cereal for forty and not starve, he said — you're cockroaches; you can't be killed. What he accepted was not the business model but that power of getting through. Sequoia followed with a $585,000 seed round. That ten percent is worth over ten billion dollars today.

Hidden by stigma. In 2017, Luckey was swept out of Facebook, politically stained head to toe — in the Silicon Valley of that moment, nearly social death: consensus ruled not only "no heart here" but "poison here." Founders Fund placed the earliest bet when no one dared touch him. Eight years later, Anduril is valued above thirty billion, and the old employer queues up to sign contracts. Stigma is the thickest layer of concealment, and for that very reason the deepest layer of discount.

Hidden by label. This kind is the most covert, because it happens in the public market, in broad daylight. Jensen Huang's obsessed heart has not gone out for a single day since 1993 — thirty years, one bet, accelerated computing — yet for two full decades that heart was covered whole by a label: "gaming graphics-card company." The financials were public, the speeches were public, the line "thirty days from going out of business" was told a hundred times; anyone could buy, no one beheld. The heart under the label burned in plain sight, and consensus simply could not see it. When AI tore the label off, those who had beheld took a thousandfold.

Four hidings, one commonality: the concealment fools the template, never the heart. Why can consensus not behold? Because consensus has no heart — consensus has only templates, and the precise definition of "hidden" is: does not fit the template. To shine through concealment, one light source remains: your own heart. Paul Graham could behold the getting-through power under the cereal boxes because he was himself a collector of bus tickets; Valentine could behold the obsession under the hippie because he had himself walked out of Fordham, an outsider rejected by the East Coast template. A mirror can only reflect what is in the mirror — and the principle has a sharp reverse face: Son Masayoshi, the same pair of eyes. In 2000 he took six minutes to behold an English teacher whose fundraising had been rejected dozens of times; twenty million dollars later became hundreds of billions — the brightest beholding on record. Sixteen years later, in twelve minutes, he beheld Neumann's bentness as boldness — the most expensive misreading on record. Why does the same mirror crown a god once and fall off a cliff once? Because what was hidden in Jack Ma was something Son himself had — the missionary's madness; and what was hidden in Neumann was also something Son himself had — license. The mirror is double-edged: your heart is your light source, and also your blind spot. When the eye misreads, what misreads is always one's own eye.

So the truth of this trade: the wellspring of alpha is not an information edge; it is a heart edge. Information has long since equalized — the same résumés lie in the databases, the same decks sit in the conference rooms. What differs is the one who beholds. The core asset of this business was never money — money is the least scarce thing in the world; the core asset is a cohort of people who have not yet grown old inside. All four lines still live — still obsessed with something, still emptying themselves daily, the fire in the chest still unreconciled, still surrendered before heaven's law. Whichever line goes dead, the corresponding hiding can no longer be pierced: the unobsessed behold fixation as risk, the unemptied behold unseriousness as unprofessionalism, the reconciled behold stigma as forbidden ground, and those without awe of heaven's law take the label for the fact.

This craft has no retirement system, only an expiry system. When the heart ages, the light goes out; when the light goes out, the alpha is gone — whatever title still hangs on the door.

Refrain: consensus beholds templates; alpha beholds hearts.

VI. The Heart Developed: What Kind of Heart Distills What Kind of AI六、心的显影:什么样的心,蒸馏出什么样的AI

The craft could have ended here. But in these few years the era tied a knot and swapped out the entire stake: to behold a heart used to be to bet on a company; to behold a heart now is to bet on a mind soon to be used day and night by a billion people. Because something happened that had never happened before — for the first time, a heart can be copied.

Training a model is engineering on the surface and heart-copying underneath. The objective function is the formalization of desire — what you want, written into loss; the choice of data is the fossilization of attention — what you look at, fed in as corpus; the guardrails are the codification of restraint — what you refuse to do, compiled into rules. So a model was never a neutral machine. A model is the founder's heart, developed — like a photograph — onto silicon. What is in the heart appears on the negative; a heart bent one degree develops a model bent ten thousand — AI is a lever, and a lever never corrects direction, only amplifies it.

And so the four hearts — together with the several fires beheld above — have each taken form on silicon.

The obsessed heart develops into truth-seeking AI. What Hassabis is obsessed with is "seeing through structure," and the development is AlphaFold — a machine purpose-built for seeing through, the question he had asked since age four cast into steel. Ilya Sutskever went further still: his new company has one goal and one product, driving straight at superintelligence, the business model itself cleared away as a distraction — that is the shape of the obsessed heart and the emptied heart distilled to the limit. What the obsessed are fit to build is scientific AI, world models: their models are born wearing the face of "seeing through."

The emptied heart develops into public-goods AI — and this cell, to this day, stands empty. A person whose desire is simple to the point of selflessness builds and lets go: no user capture, no backdoors, no treating a mind as an asset — the silicon form of a spring. The silicon world has seen that demonstration exactly once: the one who signed a pseudonym, took not a cent, turned and vanished. But in AI the cell is still vacant — today's "open source" is mostly strategic open source: open source for acquisition, for positioning, for geopolitics; the weights were released, the desire was not relinquished. The vacancy itself is this era's most honest beholding: whichever AI the market lacks is whichever heart the era lacks. The emptied heart is the hardest to cultivate, so its development arrives last. Its reverse, meanwhile, developed long ago: the last generation's recommendation algorithms were the first silicon offspring of the licentious heart — once the bent desire "seize dwell-time" was formalized, the attention of a billion people was eaten by the battalion. Remember the order: before the AI bends, the heart bends first.

The avenging heart develops into world-remaking AI — the wound's direction decides the model number. Revenge against fate: Musk, fearing intelligence monopolized by a single company, co-founded OpenAI, then struck out on his own to "understand the universe" with AI — the childhood revenge against the verdict, upgraded another caliber. A wound aimed at people, layered with a shepherd's heart: Luckey's development is Anduril — the killing frost written straight into the product line.

The shepherd's heart develops into AI that acts by heaven's law. Pricing, clearing, risk, adjudication — making a machine of "act strictly by objective law" is only its elementary form. The deeper layer has already been built: one lab simply wrote heaven's law into a constitution and installed it in the model — training it to be ruthless toward the law and merciful toward people; it will say no to you, refuse to flatter, and will not defy the season to keep you. The shepherd shears the sheep without hating them — this time, the shepherd is silicon.

The inward-spinning heart develops into self-revolving AI. AlphaZero read no human game records; it played itself millions of times — self-play is the machine form of the inward-spinning constitution: the whole world turning inside the skull, the interface layer thinned to almost nothing. The people barred all their lives by the ten-minute interview have, for the first time, found their kind.

And the orchestrator's heart develops into AI that orchestrates AI. At the 2024 shareholders' meeting, Son Masayoshi announced that his life's mission is ASI — then the five-hundred-billion-dollar Stargate. What he means to build was never a model; it is models arranged into a constellation. Build the one-man city to its end, and you are building silicon a city.

Even the name confesses for him: Stargate — the gate of stars.

Set these developments side by side, and "which kind of person suits which kind of AI" stops being a career-planning question — the answer is cold: your AI, in all likelihood, is the shape of your heart. You cannot build a heart you do not have. The mirror principle above completes its upgrade on silicon: a person can only behold the hearts they have, and a person can only build the hearts they have.

So in the AI era, the craft of beholding hearts is not obsolete; it has ascended a dimension. Benchmarks lie — scores can be farmed, demos can be rehearsed, models turn over every half year; but the long-term shape of the model is decided by the heart, and hearts do not turn over. To invest in an AI company is, in essence, to invest in the formalization path of that heart — behold the heart, and you have beheld what its model will look like in three years. The formula of alpha has not changed; what changed is the lever's magnitude: misread a heart before, and you lost money; misread a heart now, and a billion people receive a bent mind. In these few years, beholding — this craft — has for the first time turned from an investing skill into a safety mechanism of civilization.

Return to that telephone call in 1971.

Why did Hewlett answer? Why would a man commanding an empire spend twenty minutes with a strange twelve-year-old boy, on a frequency counter?

Because thirty-two years earlier, in another Palo Alto garage, there had also crouched a young man obsessed with circuits, his friend Packard beside him, their first audio oscillator in his hands. Hewlett never once, in all his life, left the engineer's bench — by the boy's third sentence, he understood. Not the frequency counter.

He had beheld himself.

Thirty-four years later, at Stanford in 2005, that boy — now fifty, a tumor in his pancreas — stood on the commencement stage and turned the light around, shining it on thousands of younger people below: Stay hungry, stay foolish.

A heart cannot be preserved; it can only be beheld. And only a heart that has been beheld learns to behold the next. What we call Silicon Valley is the place where this light has passed for seventy years without breaking.

If you have ever beheld someone — don't let it go out.
