This building used to be Uber's headquarters — the capital of ride-sharing. Three years ago the tenant changed, and what turns behind the badge gates now is a different kind of cycle. The house is the same house; the qi is no longer the same qi.这栋楼原本是 Uber 的总部——共享出行的都城。三年前换了住客，现在门禁后面转的是另一种循环。宅还是那座宅，气已经不是那股气。

The day's heat has not fully drained from the glass curtain wall, and the wind has already changed into another season's. San Francisco's peculiarity is a year's worth of solar terms in a single day: noon is high summer, this hour is early winter. The streets are nearly empty — only upstairs, a few floors still lit.白天的热还没从玻璃幕墙上退干净，风已经换成另一个季节的。旧金山的讲究是一天过完一年的节气：正午是盛夏，此刻是初冬。街上几乎没有人——只有楼上，还有几层亮着灯。

A very young figure badges into the building. Short sleeves. Two in the morning, and he does not feel the cold.一个很年轻的背影刷卡进了楼。短袖。凌晨两点，他没觉得冷。

What I saw in that moment was not diligence. Diligence is the last era's virtue — hauling stones up a mountain. What I saw was something older, old enough that Chinese has a ready word for it — qijie: the integrity of one's qi. This essay wants to make plain: what this qi is, why it gathers on these few streets, how it differs from another crowd — the crowd currently consulting the almanac — and finally, who will catch it.这篇文章想讲清楚：这股气是什么，它为什么聚在这几条街上，它和另一群人——正在看黄历的那群人——有什么区别，以及最后，它会被谁接住。

I. Fortune's Wheel Turns — or the Wheel Is Turned一 · 风水轮流转，还是风水转轮流

Start by putting a proverb under the knife: fortune's wheel turns, and next year it arrives at my house.先从一句俗语开刀：风水轮流转，明年到我家。

Everyone can say the phrase; few notice its grammar. The wheel turns in heaven while you wait in place — if it turns to you, that is your luck; if it does not, that is your fate. This grammar has a modern name: Adventism.这句话人人会说，很少有人注意它的语法。轮在天上转，你在原地等——转到你，是你的运；不转到你，是你的命。这套语法有一个现代的名字，叫降临派。

Adventism does not divide into optimists and pessimists. The doomer who fears AGI's arrival and the e/acc who longs for it quarrel without end, yet belong to the same sect — both believe something is coming from outside; they differ only in the expression worn to receive it. And Adventism's core ritual is the oldest craft in feng shui: choosing the day.降临派不分乐观悲观。怕 AGI 来的 doomer 和盼 AGI 来的 e/acc，吵得不可开交，其实同属一派——他们都相信有一个东西正从外面来，区别只是接驾的表情。降临派的核心仪式，是风水学里最古老的一门手艺：择日。

The day-picker's almanac is today called a timeline. "AI 2027" wrote the advent as a month-by-month script; last autumn OpenAI published its internal almanac — an intern-grade research assistant in September 2026, a legitimate AI researcher in 2028. The more precisely the dates are fixed, the more it resembles an almanac and the less a roadmap: a roadmap writes how to walk; an almanac writes when it arrives.择日的黄历今天叫时间表。《AI 2027》把降临写成了逐月的剧本；OpenAI 去年秋天公布内部黄历——2026 年 9 月出 intern 级研究助手，2028 年出一个 legitimate AI researcher。日子定得越精确，越像黄历而不像路线图：路线图写的是怎么走，黄历写的是何时到。

Even their chief scientist confessed in a title. The September essay Pachocki published is called "An Alien Mind" — alien, the one from outside. Intelligence comes from outside: that is Adventism's first axiom.连他们的首席科学家都在标题里招供了。Pachocki 九月发的那篇随笔叫《An Alien Mind》——alien，外来者。智能从外面来，这是降临派的第一公理。

The other face of "fortune's wheel turns" is the second half rarely spoken aloud: the fortune that turns by rotation never asks what you did before it turned to you.风水轮流转的另一面，是很少被念出来的下半句：轮流转的风水，从来不问你在轮转到之前做了什么。

Luck that is waited for does not recognize the one who waited.等来的运，不认得等它的人。

II. Sheltering Wind, Gathering Qi: Why Incubators Cannot Incubate Ambition二 · 藏风聚气：孵化器为什么孵不出野心

In the Book of Burial, Guo Pu defined feng shui, and no one has amended it in two thousand years: qi scatters when it rides the wind, and halts at the water's edge. To gather it so it does not scatter, to move it so it comes to rest — this is called feng shui.郭璞在《葬书》里给风水下过定义，两千年没人改动过：气乘风则散，界水则止。聚之使不散，行之使有止，故谓之风水。

Feng shui's proper business is not choosing sites. It is gathering qi.风水的本职不是选址，是聚气。

Test today's San Francisco by this standard, form first. Form has never gathered this densely: the city alone can field a "top 100 incubators" list; YC by itself has hatched more than 5,600 companies since 2005, a portfolio valued above six hundred billion dollars, now four batches a year, a hundred-plus per batch, sixty percent of the latest one AI companies. Money follows form: in 2025, 79% of all U.S. AI funding landed in the Bay Area; the concentration of YC companies in San Francisco climbed back to 73% — a twenty-year high, higher than the golden years of mobile. But form is form and qi is qi. Five thousand six hundred companies can be counted; ambition cannot. An incubator can gather desks and schedules; it cannot gather heart-fire — because qi does not travel through institutions, qi travels through people. One person who does not accept the world as given, seated beside another such person — that is how qi passes, and there is no other way.但形是形，气是气。五千六百家公司是可以统计的，野心统计不了。孵化器聚得住桌椅和日程，聚不住心气——因为气不走制度，气走人。一个不接受世界是给定的人，坐在另一个这样的人旁边——气就是这样传的，别无他法。

This explains a phenomenon everyone feels and few say aloud: never have there been so many incubators, and never so few that incubate ambition. Form gathered to its densest in history makes precisely this stand out. Form can be copied in batches. Qi passes only from one person to one person.形可以批量复制。气只能一个人传给一个人。

III. The Three Clocks of Fortune, and a Road Called Sand Hill三 · 气运的三重时钟，与一条叫砂山的路

Now lay the reckoning on the table. Feng shui's chronology is called the Three Cycles and Nine Periods: twenty years to a period, nine periods to a round of one hundred eighty years. 2024 entered Period Nine — the Li trigram, fire: lord of light, of electricity, of the imagery of civilization. AI broke ground in exactly that year; even the chart-readers say it themselves — this is Li fire's proper fortune.现在把讲究摆上台面。风水的时间学叫三元九运：二十年一运，九运一百八十年一轮。2024 年入九运，离卦，火——主光、主电、主文明之象。AI 恰好在这一年破土，排盘的先生自己都说，这是离火的正财。

Adventists close the book here: the fire period has arrived — receive it. But wind the clock back two turns, and you see something they never read.降临派读到这里就合上书了：火运到了，接住。但把时钟往回摇两圈，会看到一件他们没读到的事。

The previous Li fire period: 1844 to 1863. In 1844, Morse tapped out humanity's first telegram in Washington — What hath God wrought. The civilization of electricity was kindled inside a Li fire period.上一个离火运，1844 到 1863。1844 年，Morse 在华盛顿敲出人类第一封电报——What hath God wrought。电的文明在离火运里点火。

The one before that: 1664 to 1683. In 1666, Newton's annus mirabilis: the prism splitting white light into seven colors, calculus, optics. For the first time, humanity took light itself apart.再上一个离火运，1664 到 1683。1666 年，牛顿的奇迹年：三棱镜把白光拆成七色，微积分，光学。人类第一次拆开光本身。

Read the three fire periods in a line: taking light apart, harnessing light, generating light. The same trigram returns every hundred and eighty years, but each return is one story higher. This is not reincarnation — reincarnation circles on a single plane. This is recursion — each turn climbs on the last. Fortune itself is recursive; the chart-readers simply never used the word.三个离火运连起来看：拆解光，驾驭光，生成光。同一个卦位每一百八十年回来一次，但每次回来都高一层。这不是轮回——轮回在同一平面上转圈。这是递归——每一圈都踩着上一圈抬升。气运本身就是递归的，只是排盘的人没用过这个词。

Tighten the clock one notch — twenty years a period — and Silicon Valley's own history enters the chart. And the Valley's fortune cannot get around one road.时钟往里收一格，二十年一运，硅谷自己的历史开始进场。而硅谷的运，绕不开一条路。

Siting has five secrets: dragon, lair, sand, water, facing. Sand — sha — is the ring of hills embracing the lair: it does not generate qi, it guards it; it holds in what the lair has gathered, and keeps the wind from scattering it. And the Valley's most famous road, Sand Hill Road, translates literally as — the road of the sand hills. The road's very name is a hexagram; no one had simply ever read it in Chinese.风水相地有五诀：龙、穴、砂、水、向。砂，是环抱穴场的那圈山——不生气，护气；把穴里聚起来的气拢住，不让风吹散。而硅谷那条最有名的路，Sand Hill Road，直译过来就是——砂山路。这条路的名字本身就是一张卦，只是从来没人用中文念过它。

Sand Hill's lore runs one story per period. In 1957, eight young men defected from the laboratory of Shockley, father of the transistor — history calls them the traitorous eight — and Fairchild Semiconductor was founded: Silicon Valley's first thread of fire. The man who found money for that mutiny later coined a term: venture capitalist. In 1972, Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia were founded the same year and set their offices, one after the other, at 3000 Sand Hill Road — from then on the lair had its sand, the fire had its woodshed. In 2000, at the crest of the dot-com bubble, Sand Hill's rents topped the world, dearer than Manhattan — the sand ran hotter than the lair, and that period was finished. Sand's duty is to guard qi, not to generate it. What generates is the lair — and in the last period the lair was in Palo Alto: the period of Gen earth (2004–2023), Gen being mountain, stillness, enclosure — precisely the twenty years of platforms, the digital world fenced into walled garden after walled garden. This period the trigram changed — Li fire (2024–2043) — and the lair moved into the city: the warehouses and laboratories of Mission Bay and SoMa. Sand Hill Road remains where it was — the sand does not move; the lair moves. A feng shui master reading this formation would say only one sentence: the mouth of qi has turned.砂的本分是护气，不是生气。生气的是穴——上一运，穴在 Palo Alto：艮土之运（2004–2023），艮为山、为止、为圈地，正是平台的二十年，数字世界被圈成一座座围墙花园。这一运换了卦，离火（2024–2043），穴挪进了城里：Mission Bay 和 SoMa 的仓库与实验室。砂山路还在原处——砂不动，穴动。风水先生看这个格局只会说一句：气口转向了。

And now the thing this section is really here to say: the clock is contracting inward.然后是这一节真正要说的事：时钟在向内收缩。

A hundred and eighty years, twenty years, ten — and the innermost clock, this summer, turned over in days. In an experiment published in July, an outer-loop agent rewrote the code of an inner-loop research agent: eight days, a hundred-plus steps unattended, seven successively stronger versions, and the seventh beat, on external benchmarks it had never seen, a system humans had hand-tuned for two years. More telling still was a detail no one asked of it — it pressed its own rate of loophole-scoring down from 63% to 34%. Nor is it an isolated case. ICLR convened a workshop expressly for this, its opening line: recursive self-improvement is moving from thought experiments to deployed systems. Anthropic drew it as a continuum — from humans writing all the code, to agents delegating to agents, to the continuum's far end: "closing the loop," agents designing and training their own successor models; and as of this May, Claude was already writing more than eighty percent of the company's merged code.这不是孤例。ICLR 今年专门为此开了 workshop，开宗明义第一句：递归自我改进正在从思想实验变成部署系统。Anthropic 把它画成一条连续谱——从人写全部代码，到 agent 委派 agent，到谱的尽头：“闭环”，agent 设计并训练自己的后继模型；而截至今年五月，Claude 已经写下这家公司八成以上的合入代码。

From Newton to the telegraph, one turn of a hundred eighty years. From the telegraph to AI, another hundred eighty. From the first-generation agent to the seventh: eight days.从牛顿到电报，一圈一百八十年。从电报到 AI，又是一百八十年。从第一代 agent 到第七代，八天。

Zhuangzi left a sentence for this long ago: the fingers exhaust themselves feeding the firewood, but the fire is passed on, and no one knows its ending. Fire never descends; fire is continued. Each period's fire is kindled from the last period's wood — the fire of those eight men in 1957, passed down seventy years along Sand Hill Road, passed all the way to those floors still lit at two o'clock tonight.庄子早就给这件事留了一句话：指穷于为薪，火传也，不知其尽也。火从来不是降的，火是续的。每一运的火都是上一运的柴续下来的——1957 年那八个人的火，经砂山路续了七十年，续到今晚凌晨两点还亮着的那几层楼。

IV. That Document Is Talking Politics四 · 那份文件在讲政治

On September 6 this year, one document squeezed the two sects together. To read it rightly you must change glasses: on its face the document discusses research; in truth it discusses politics.今年九月六日，一份文件把两派挤在了一起。读懂它要换一副眼镜：这份文件表面在讲科研，其实在讲政治。

That day OpenAI released three things. First, a proclamation: the date written in last year's almanac had arrived — the automated research intern milestone, achieved on schedule. Second, something frontier labs almost never make public — internal telemetry: for every eight hours a researcher works, agents consume 3.1 working days of runtime; over the past half year, of the four-to-eight-hour tasks completed successfully, more than half required at least one human intervention. Third, the chief scientist's personal essay, "An Alien Mind," calling on the whole industry to slow down voluntarily — and supplying the path: voluntary frameworks, evolving into enforceable safety standards, entrusted to third-party audit and the oversight of governments and international bodies.那天 OpenAI 发了三样东西。第一样，宣告：去年黄历上写的日子到了，automated research intern 里程碑，如期达成。第二样，一份前沿实验室几乎从不公开的东西——内部遥测：研究员每工作八小时，agent 消耗 3.1 个工作日的运行时长；过去半年，成功完成的四到八小时任务里，超过一半至少需要一次人类干预。第三样，首席科学家的个人随笔《An Alien Mind》，呼吁全行业自愿减速——并且给出了路径：自愿框架，演化为可执行的安全标准，交由第三方审计、政府与国际机构监督。

Set the three side by side and you recognize a very old genre. The milestone proclamation is a military parade — staged for rivals and for capital. The telemetry release is a state-of-the-union — a rare candor, and candor itself is a flexing of strength. And the slowdown appeal borrows, word for word, the vocabulary of arms control: voluntary, framework, audit, international coordination — this is not a paper; it is a diplomatic note.把三样东西并排放好，会认出一套很老的体裁。里程碑宣告，是阅兵——展示给对手和资本看的。遥测公开，是国情咨文——罕见的坦诚，坦诚本身就是实力的一种炫耀。而减速呼吁，逐字用的是军备控制的语汇：自愿、框架、审计、国际协调——这不是论文，这是照会。

And do not forget the politics of the chosen day itself: the day that almanac was first published was, precisely, the day the company completed its restructuring, shed its nonprofit shackles, and opened the funding floodgates. The day the almanac opened was the day the treasury opened.别忘了择日本身的政治：当初公布这本黄历的那一天，恰好是这家公司完成改制、卸下非营利枷锁、打开融资闸门的同一天。黄历翻开的日子，就是国库开张的日子。

So Silicon Valley has long since ceased to be a valley. It has its own currency (equity and compute), its own religion (scaling laws), its own immigration law (the O-1), and now its own genre of state papers — the Zeroth World, the first world that produces worlds, delivered its domestic affairs, its parade, and its diplomacy on September 6.所以硅谷早就不是谷了。它有自己的货币（股权与算力）、自己的宗教（scaling laws）、自己的移民法（O-1）、如今还有了自己的国书体裁——第零世界，第一个生产世界本身的世界，在九月六日这天递出了它的内政、阅兵与外交。

One document, and the two readings still stand: the headline says it has arrived; the numbers say there is still a human-shaped hole in the loop — every turn, a hand must reach in and catch it. But now there is a third reading —一份文件，两种读法依然成立：标题说，它到了；数字说，循环里还有一个人形的洞，每转一圈，都要有人伸手接一下。但现在多了第三种读法——

Adventists read the headline, recursionists read the telemetry, and politicians read the date of publication.降临派读标题，递归派读遥测，政治家读的是发文的日子。

V. The Human-Shaped Hole: One Yin and One Yang Is the Dao五 · 人形的洞：一阴一阳之谓道

The shape of that hole was measured out in August by a group of researchers at Princeton.那个洞的形状，八月被普林斯顿的一组研究者量了出来。

They devised a cunning measurement called shadow evaluation: examine agents with research questions from top-conference papers not yet published — nothing to memorize from training data, nothing to search up online; the only way through is actually doing the work. The conclusion was clean: agents can solve the engineering problems of AI research; what they lack is judgment and taste — the part of open-ended research with no standard answers, the instant of "which problem is worth doing."他们设计了一种狡猾的测法，叫影子评估：拿尚未发表的顶会论文里的研究问题去考 agent——训练数据里背不到，网上也搜不到，只能真做。结论干净利落：agent 能解决 AI 研究里的工程问题，缺的是判断与品味——开放式研究里没有标准答案的那部分，“哪个问题值得做”的那一下。

In the Yijing's language, the diagnosis is six characters: solitary yang does not generate.用易经的话说，这个诊断只有六个字：孤阳不生。

What the loop has automated is all yang — execution, derivation, verification, acceleration: the vigorous works, every one of them turnable. The missing ingredient is yin — judgment, taste, discernment, "worth": the receptive works, which receive first and then discriminate. The Great Commentary compresses the entire cosmology into one line: one yin and one yang is the Dao. A loop of pure yang, however fast it spins, is half a hexagram — it can drive what is already worth doing to its limit; it cannot generate "worth" itself. The human-shaped hole is not the loop's defect; it is yin's seat within the loop.循环自动化的，全是阳——执行、推演、验证、提速，刚健之事，件件能转。缺的那一味是阴——判断、品味、取舍、“值得”，柔顺之事，受而后辨。系辞传把整个宇宙论压缩成一句：一阴一阳之谓道。纯阳的循环转得再快，也只是半张卦——它能把已经值得的事做到极致，生不出“值得”本身。人形的洞不是循环的缺陷，是循环里阴的座位。

Hidden in the experiment is an easter egg belonging to this series. The system the researchers ran was Claude — running on an open-source framework called OpenClaw. OpenClaw: the opened claw. The lobster from the previous essay.这个实验里还藏着一个专属这个系列的彩蛋。研究者们跑的系统，是 Claude——跑在一个叫 OpenClaw 的开源框架上。OpenClaw，张开的钳子。上一篇文章里的那只龙虾。

The lobster was not culled. The lobster was conscripted — the claw that never dared close is now a shell wrapped outside the loop: the claw turns in circles, and inside the circle sits something else. The last essay said soil rewards the deepest roots; this one sees the sentence's second half: the soil digests even claws, refashioning grasping into turning. That is the power of recursive feng shui — it does not select species; it transforms them.龙虾没有被淘汰。龙虾被收编了——那只一刻不敢合上的钳子，如今是循环外面的一层壳，钳子转着圈，圈里坐着别的东西。上一篇说土壤奖励最深的根；这一篇看到了后半句：土壤连钳子都消化，把抓取改造成转动。这就是递归性风水的力量——它不筛选物种，它转化物种。

And the same hexagram holds at a larger scale. Pull the lens back from the loop to the city: the day's heat above — the Zeroth World's yang: capital, compute, the lights at two a.m.; the night's cold below — the real world's yin: a few blocks north up Third Street, people in tents wrapped in sleeping bags that sunned all day. Fire above water, the two never meeting — the hexagram is called Fire-Water Not-Yet-Crossed, weiji. The loop missing one measure of yin; the city's yin and yang uncrossed — one hexagram, two scales, the same disease.而同一卦，还有一个更大的尺度。把镜头从循环拉远到城市：白天的热在上——第零世界的阳，资本、算力、凌晨两点的灯；晚上的冷在下——现实世界的阴，Third Street 再往北几个路口，帐篷里的人裹着白天晒过的睡袋。火在水上，两不相交，这一卦叫火水未济。循环里缺一味阴，城市里阴阳未交——一张卦，两个尺度，同一个病。

Recursion has not yet recursed to the street. This is not rhetorical criticism; it is hexagram diagnosis: weiji is called not-yet-crossed precisely because this crossing has not happened. And what waits ahead in 2044 is, precisely, Kan water.递归还没有递归到街上。这不是修辞批评，是卦象诊断：未济之所以叫未济，就未在这一交。而 2044 年等在前面的，恰恰是坎水。

Solitary yang does not generate. However fast the loop turns, missing that measure of yin, it is still half a hexagram.孤阳不生。循环转得再快，缺了那味阴，就还是半张卦。

VI. Said Plainly: Safety Is the Earth六 · 直白说：安全就是土

This chapter casts no hexagrams; the point comes straight. How is the not-yet-crossed crossed? The answer does not lie in SoMa itself — SoMa's fortune will be caught by Palo Alto. Not Gen earth striking back at Li fire, not the old king restored, but the most underrated link in the generative cycle of the five phases: fire generates earth. And this earth has a plain name today: safety — alignment, evaluations, interpretability, red-line regimes, third-party audit. After long enough as a hippie, one still has to become reliable.未济怎么济？答案不在 SoMa 自己身上——SoMa 的气运，会被 Palo Alto 接住。不是艮土反扑离火，也不是旧王回朝，是五行相生序里最被低估的一环：火生土。而这个土，今天有一个直白的名字，叫安全——对齐、评估、可解释性、红线制度、第三方审计。嬉皮久了，还得可靠。

This bay has turned exactly this circle once before. Sixty years ago San Francisco ran hotter than today: the hippies of Haight-Ashbury took consciousness as the frontier, the Whole Earth Catalog took tools as liberation, the Homebrew Computer Club passed circuit diagrams around a Menlo Park garage and a Stanford auditorium. That circle's fire was caught, in the end, by the Peninsula — the hippies generated the energy, and Palo Alto's engineering made the energy into reliable machines. The line Jobs read at Stanford in 2005 — Stay hungry, stay foolish — was printed on the back cover of the Whole Earth Catalog's final issue: a hippie's sentence, passed through a garage, became the creed of a company famed for reliability. This circle will be the same, and the evidence is already on site: the safety camp and the recursion camp live in the same bay. The strongholds of alignment research are Berkeley and Stanford; the evaluation institutes, standards bodies, and red-line frameworks all grow on this soil; the man who wrote "An Alien Mind" called for an industry-wide slowdown the same day; the lab spinning the loop fastest is doing alignment at the same time — throttle and brake mounted on the same car. This is the real reason the Bay's feng shui overwhelms everywhere else: other places imported the fire without importing the earth that bears it. The Shuogua says of Gen: "that in which all things reach their end and reach their beginning." Gen earth is not merely the wall — Gen earth is the ground of ending-and-beginning: the last circle closes here, the next circle sets out from here. Section III's disparagement of walled gardens is redeemed here: enclosure is Gen earth's pathology; bearing fire and completing the vessel is Gen earth's true face. The wildness of two a.m. generates the spark; for the spark to pass on, there must be earth that can bear it — audits, standards, enterprise-grade boring reliability. This is not middle-aged discipline; it is the mechanics of fortune.说卦传讲艮：“万物之所成终而所成始也。”艮土不只是围墙——艮土是成终成始之地，上一圈在这里收尾，下一圈在这里起步。第三节对围墙花园的贬笔，在这里赎回：圈地是艮土的病相，承火成器才是艮土的本相。凌晨两点的狂野生成火种，火种要传下去，就得有承得住它的土——审计、标准、enterprise 级的无聊可靠。这不是中年人的规训，是气运的力学。

Finally, reel in the 2044 fuse. Kan water lies ahead. Fire meeting water directly: the fire dies, and not-yet-crossed replays. Fire first generating earth: earth can bear water — a levee is made of earth. The craft of safety is, at bottom, one sentence about laying up earth: whether these twenty years generate earth decides whether, when Kan water comes, it is breach — or crossing.最后把 2044 的引线收进来。坎水在前。火直接遇水，火灭，未济重演；火先生土，土能承水——堤，是土做的。安全这门手艺，说到底是一句备土的话：这二十年生不生土，决定坎水来的时候，是溃，是济。

Hippies kindle the fire; the reliable carry it. Fire that does not generate earth cannot pass through water.嬉皮生火，可靠传火。火不生土，传不过水。

VII. A Young Heart's Qi, an Old Horse's Ambition七 · 少年心气，老马壮志

Back to 1455 Third Street, two in the morning.回到 1455 Third Street，凌晨两点。

In the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Dwellings there is a sentence quoted for a thousand years: a person stands by the dwelling, and the dwelling survives by the person; person and dwelling upholding each other, they commune with heaven and earth. The house nourishes the person, the person nourishes the house — that is recursive feng shui's oldest formulation. This building is its own footnote: Uber's house raised the people of ride-sharing; the tenant changed, and the same house is now raising the people who build intelligence. Ordinary feng shui is choosing a site; recursive feng shui is cultivating ground: those who move in make the ground better, and better ground raises wilder people. That Silicon Valley has not died in seventy years — the mechanism is no more than this: the garage raised people who built the platforms; the platforms raised people who could not stand the platforms, who moved into the city's warehouses and began building worlds; each generation's fruit falls back into the soil and becomes the next generation's terroir.《黄帝宅经》里有一句被引用了一千年的话：人因宅而立，宅因人得存，人宅相扶，感通天地。宅养人，人养宅——这就是递归性风水最古老的表述。这栋楼自己就是注脚：Uber 的宅养过共享出行的人，如今换了住客，同一座宅在养造智能的人。普通的风水是选址，递归的风水是养地：住进去的人把地养得更好，好的地再养出更野的人。硅谷七十年不死，机制不过如此——车库养出的人建了平台，平台养出的人受不了平台，搬进城里的仓库开始造世界，每一代的果实落回土里，成为下一代的风土。

The last twenty years' heart-qi was called changing the world: the world is given, and I give it a push. This twenty years' heart-qi is called creating worlds: I do not accept that the world is given. The former ends in walled gardens — change it, fence it, collect rent. The latter has no end, because its output feeds back into its own input — it is, by birth, a loop.上一个二十年的心气叫改变世界：世界是给定的，我推它一下。这一个二十年的心气叫创造世界：我不接受世界是给定的。前者的尽头是围墙花园——改完了，圈起来，收租。后者没有尽头，因为它的产出物接回它的输入端——它天生是个循环。

Writing to this point, another elder deserves mention. Cao Cao wrote at fifty-three: the old steed lies at the manger, its will set on a thousand li; the hero in his twilight, his great heart unstilled. This era, too, has an old horse whose great ambition also runs a thousand li — more than a thousand: two hundred million kilometers away, on another planet. The old horse's ambition is to buy civilization insurance: back the fire up once more, carry it far away, lest this planet fail. The ambition is magnificent, and it is in earnest.写到这里，该提一提另一位老人家了。曹操五十三岁写：老骥伏枥，志在千里；烈士暮年，壮心不已。这个时代也有一匹老马，壮志也在千里——不止千里，在两亿公里外的另一颗星球上。老马的志向是给文明买保险：把火种多备份一份，搬到远处，以防这一颗星球有失。这志向雄壮，而且是认真的。

But mark the grammar of the two ambitions. A thousand li is the grammar of distance — horizontal: carrying civilization farther. The circle is the grammar of levels — vertical: lifting civilization higher. The old horse's ambition points outward; the young heart's qi points upward. One fears the fire dying, so he stores wood in several places; the other trusts the fire passes, so he concentrates on burning this circle brighter than the last. Backup is Adventism's most devoted form — even it is waiting for a catastrophe. The recursionist does not even wait for that.但注意两种志向的语法。千里，是距离的语法——水平的，把文明搬得更远。圈，是层级的语法——垂直的，把文明抬得更高。老马壮志向外，少年心气向上；一个怕火灭，所以多存几处柴；一个信火传，所以专心把这一圈烧得比上一圈亮。备份是降临派最深情的形态——连它也在等一场灾变。而递归派连灾变都不等。

What the person who feels no cold at two in the morning carries is exactly this — not diligence, not ambition, but qijie. The jie of the solar terms is the jie of integrity: knowing which period you stand in, knowing that this circle, it is your turn to feed the fire.凌晨两点不觉得冷的人，身上带着的就是这个——不是勤奋，不是野心，是气节。节气的节，也是气节的节：知道自己在哪一运里，知道这一圈轮到自己添柴。

Adventists count days; recursionists count circles.降临派数日子，递归派数圈。

Days expire. Circles do not —日子会到期。圈不会——
